Dr. Uli Helvoigt

Veterinarian/Partner

Born in the south of Germany, Dr. Uli Helvoigt relocated to Canada with her family as a teenager when they moved to rural BC, acquiring several horses, dogs, cats and sheep. This shaped her personality and passion for animals and the outdoors.

Uli completed her Bachelor of Science degree between UBC and Kamloops before deciding to pursue a career in Veterinary medicine. Graduating with a Doctorate of Veterinary medicine from the Western Collage of Veterinary Medicine in 2003, she moved her partner and various animals from Saskatchewan to Cranbrook, accepting a mixed animal position. Uli established Tanglefoot Veterinary services in 2009 as a mobile service, expanding into a small clinic and then building our current space all within 6 years!

Uli loves the daily challenges of this career and that each day is a new adventure! A passion for horses has always fueled her path, but she also enjoys working with small animals and some exotic species. She has special interest in orthopedics, dentistry and chiropractic care – all for which she has taken further education. It is not unusual to see Uli jump from an orthopedic surgery straight to the barn for equine appointments in the same day.

Uli has a small menagerie at home consisting of four horses, chickens, 3 dogs, 2 cats. She shares her home with her husband and 2 children. Uli’s passions are all activities outdoors! Outside of work you can find her on horseback, hiking, mountain biking or skiing in the winter.

Shelley Holzapfel

Registered Veterinary Technologist/Office Manager/Partner

Shelley was raised on the family farm in rural Saskatchewan and knew early on that she would like to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.  She received her education through the Veterinary Technician Program at Kelsey SIAST in Saskatoon and became a licensed RVT in 1997.  Shelley spent the first half of her veterinary career working in small animal practice in Saskatoon and moved to Cranbrook in the fall of 2009.  While Shelley had started her role at Tanglefoot Veterinary Services as a veterinary technician and continues to offer technical support as needed, she now spends most of her time on business and management duties.  Shelley’s main interests in veterinary medicine have always focused on client and patient comfort, client education, small animal behavior and small animal medicine.

Shelley, her partner Lucas, and their two boys, live on a small acreage outside of Cranbrook.  Shelley enjoys the ‘farm’ life and has a large vegetable and flower garden, as well as a small flock of chickens.  Shelley, Lucas and the boys’ all share a passion for animals and they have adopted two very energetic dogs, Ashe and Ranger, and two cat’s named Ammo and S’mores.  On the rare occasion that Shelley has a moment for herself she loves to do pottery.

Shelley has recently taken on a partnership role at the clinic and she is excited to further her training in inventory and business management as well growing her knowledge in fear free practices, and ways to support the community personally and professionally.

Dr. Holly Munroe

Dr. Holly Munroe was born and raised in Nova Scotia, on Canada’s beautiful east coast.  She grew up in a very rural setting, always with cats, dogs, and horses at home. Most of her youth was spent playing sports (soccer and basketball) along with anything horse related (previous active 4-H member). Her education includes a B.Sc. in Animal Science from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (Dalhousie University), and her DVM from the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI (Class of 2011).  Holly joined Tanglefoot in 2015.

Veterinary medicine has always interested Holly, and she has come to greatly value the human-animal bond.  She wants our pets to live their healthiest and happiest lives, and is grateful for the role she gets to play in making this happen.

In her free time, Holly can be found outdoors with her two labs, often fly fishing, camping, skiing; making sure they are living their best lives!  She also is an avid quilter and loves to read. She also has a fondness for the beach, whether that is back home on the north shore of Nova Scotia, or the beautiful shores of Maui; if there is a beach and the sun and the waves, she’s into it!  Holly lives with her husband and two labs in Kimberley, BC.

He’s spent the last several years on the coast as an associate and more recently as a locum travelling across much of British Columbia; from Prince George to Haida Gwaii to Creston as well as an emergency clinic in North Vancouver.

It was important to Tom that he join a clinic that was locally owned; committed to fostering a positive team culture, work – life balance, modern facilities and continued opportunities for learning and growth. He feels that this style of work environment will enable him to sustainably offer the best possible care and attention to his patients and clients. We feel privileged that our values at Tanglefoot align so seamlessly with his and we have no doubt that he will be a valued member of our team and our community.

Tom is passionate about ensuring a stress-free visit for the patient and owner. His approach to client care is to offer his professional recommendations and then collaborate with pet owners to build a treatment plan that offers comfort for both the pet and owner. Tom always has a treat (or several) in his pocket and will tailor his appointment style to ensure your pet has the most positive experience possible. He puts the ‘chill’ in chill protocol.

Outside of work Tom enjoys trail running (often accompanied by his energetic heeler Kessie), backcountry skiing and everything else that keeps him outside. We have no doubt that he will make himself right at home in the East Kootenay’s!
