Coggins (EIA) and Health Certificates
Managing the health and movement of your horse requires adherence to specific regulatory standards. At Tanglefoot Veterinary Services, we are pleased to offer on-site Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) testing (Coggins) and preparation of Health Certificates to help you meet these essential requirements for travel, competition, or sale.
Protecting the Equine Community
Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) is a reportable viral disease primarily affecting horses, donkeys, and mules, spread via biting insects like horseflies and deerflies. Testing for EIA is an essential component of equine health management, crucial for preventing the spread of this serious infectious disease.
When Is a Coggins Test Required?
EIA testing is mandated by regulatory authorities in many regions to control the disease. A negative Coggins test indicates your horse is currently free from the virus. You may be required to have current (often annual) testing for:
- Interstate or International Travel: Moving across provincial or national borders.
- Entry into Shows or Competitions: Many venues require proof of a recent negative test.
- Pre-Purchase Exams: A common requirement during the sale of a horse.
- Movement Between Premises: Required in some regions or facilities.
Need to book a Coggins test? We are more than willing to answer any questions you have over the phone and book an appropriate appointment for this essential service.
Seamless Certification for Movement
For horses traveling across international borders, a Health Certificate is required. This document validates your horse’s healthy status and confirms current EIA testing has been performed. We streamline this process for you:
Veterinary Examination: Our veterinarians conduct a full assessment and create the Health Certificate document.
CFIA Submission: Once validated, the completed form is submitted to the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency).
Federal Signature: In Cranbrook, we are fortunate to have a local CFIA office where the federal veterinarian signs the certificate, completing the process.
