Emergency

At Tanglefoot Veterinary Services we provide coverage for equine emergencies in which horses experience sudden, critical health issues or injuries that require immediate medical attention to prevent serious complications or death. Equine emergencies can range from traumatic injuries to acute illnesses, and prompt intervention is crucial for the well-being and survival of the horse.

In the Kootenays, we are fortunate to call-share with other clinics in the area, thereby providing optimal 24 hour emergency coverage. When calling the clinic after-hours, you will be guided over the phone by a trained Veterinary Technician which will then contact the veterinarian on call and assess whether the horse needs to be seen after-hours.

Some common equine emergencies include: colic, severe lameness, traumatic injuries, respiratory distress, foaling complications, neurological emergencies, sudden collapse or unconsciousness.

Ideally, horse owners should have a well-equipped equine first aid kit on hand and be prepared to administer basic first aid measures while awaiting professional veterinary care. Additionally, having a plan in place for horse transportation to the clinic and knowing how to contact a veterinarian or nearby equine hospital in case of emergencies can help ensure timely intervention and the best possible outcome for the horse.
