Coggins (EIA) and Health Certificates
Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) testing is an essential component of equine health management aimed at preventing the spread of infectious disease and ensuring the well-being of horses. We are pleased to offer testing for this reportable disease at Tanglefoot Veterinary Services.

Here is an overview of EIA testing and completing Health Certificates in horses:
Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA): Is a reportable disease to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), and is a viral disease. EIA primarily affects horses, donkeys, and mules and is transmitted through blood-feeding insects such as horseflies and deerflies. EIA testing is mandated by regulatory authorities in many countries to control the spread of the disease. Horses may be required to undergo EIA testing for interstate travel, international export, entry into shows or competitions, pre-purchase requirement or movement between premises. A negative Coggins test indicates that the horse is not currently infected with EIAV, while a positive test indicates exposure to the virus. EIA testing requirements may vary depending on regional regulations and individual circumstances. In some areas, horses may be required to undergo annual EIA testing, while in others, testing may be required every 6 months or prior to specific events or activities. We are more then willing to answer questions over the phone to book an appropriate appointment for your horse for this service.
In Cranbrook, we are fortunate to have a local CFIA office where the horse Health Certificates are signed by a federal veterinarian. After our veterinarians create the Health Certificate document and validate the healthy status of your horse and current EIA testing is performed, this form can be submitted to the CFIA for the federal signature.
